Shopify or a Custom Website? How to Choose
Jul 2, 20262 min readBy Omo Tola
One of the first questions founders ask is whether to build on Shopify or go with a custom-built website. There's no universally right answer — it depends on what you're building.
Choose Shopify if...
- You're selling physical or digital products and need a full storefront: cart, checkout, inventory, and payments out of the box.
- You want to move fast and start selling without building payment and order infrastructure from scratch.
- You'll rely on the app ecosystem for things like email marketing, reviews, and upsells.
Choose a custom website if...
- Your site isn't primarily a store — it's a service business, portfolio, or content-driven brand.
- You need a specific layout, interaction, or feature that off-the-shelf themes and apps can't easily deliver.
- Long-term flexibility and full control over performance and structure matter more than speed to launch.
The short version
If products and checkout are the core of your business, Shopify gets you to market fast with fewer moving parts to maintain. If your business is built around something other than a storefront, a custom site usually serves you better long-term.
